Neon lights were one of the most familiar sights in the cities of the twentieth century. Shop fronts and building facades are littered with the vibrant colours of neon screaming out their simple slogans. Today though neon has been replaced by LED as the material for the signage of the city.

Commissioned to celebrate The Multiple Store’s 10th anniversary, ‘and’ is a multiple which links the past with the present. ‘and’ also anticipates the future.

Peter Liversidge has been using text in his work for over 15 years. In 2007 he began experimenting with neon, exploring the potential of the material and colour. This is his first multiple to use neon.

Peter Liversidge’s work is widely held in collections including the British Council, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate Gallery Archive and the Government Art Collection.

A solo exhibition of Liversidge’s work took place at Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh in 2007. Recent projects and publications include: ‘Proposals for Liverpool’, The Fifth Floor, Tate Liverpool (2008); ‘Proposals for Barcelona’, Centre d’Art Santa Monica (2008); ‘Proposals for Brussels’, with the British Council for the Europalia Festival (2007); ‘Festival Proposals’, Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh (2006), as well as a commission for COMMA at Bloomberg SPACE, London (June, 2009). Forthcoming projects include fifty Proposals to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (which will be presented at the 2010 Edinburgh Art Festival) and a major new work to be unveiled at Jupiter Artland in May 2010. Liversidge is also one of 8 artists selected to be part of a major research project and exhibition by the Architectural Association, London and the city of Venice, to be unveiled at the Venice Biennale in 2011.
